<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
Over the next four years, indeed, in the coming days and weeks, President Donald Trump will have to deal
with an array of national security threats.
These may come in many varieties, including provocations from North
Korea, terror assaults, Chinese or Russian tests of U.S. resolve, or perhaps a
renewed offensive by the Syrian army and its allies. Trump will count on his staff and
particularly Michael Flynn, his national security advisor, to keep him abreast
of hot button issues and to present well-considered options for responding. Indeed,
even on routine days Trump will see Flynn multiple times daily.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Unfortunately, there is
reason to worry about Flynn’s objectivity and judgment. Like Trump, Flynn
often shoots from the hip and he is not always aiming at the right target.
Flynn, a retired army lieutenant general, has filled a variety of </span>coveted
military billets, but his actions in recent years offer cause to question his
judgment.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">In 2012, he became Director of
the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the Pentagon’s intelligence apparatus.
He was forced into retirement in April 2014, after only two years at the

<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">DIA.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Flynn claims—without evidence--that
he lost his job because his views were at odds with those of President Barack
Obama. Flynn was pushed out the door because of his poor executive skills and
his rocky relationship with the senior leadership of the DIA.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His bosses concluded that the DIA was adrift
under Flynn’s directorship.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">By the summer of 2015 he
was in contact with the future president, and in February 2016 he joined Trump
campaign entourage. </span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn’s
hostility toward Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama was quickly manifested,
including in his absurd claim</span><span style="color: #111111; font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;"> that Obama was an ally of the late-Hugo Chavez, the
Castro brothers and Ali Khamenei</span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn has been an active tweeter
of lies and fake news, such as reports that Hillary Clinton was secretly
funding jihadis, as well as waging a secret war against the Catholic
Church.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Hillary </span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Clinton’s infamous e-mail server
was often a focus for his fulminations. </span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">During campaign rallies, Flynn could be
spotted on stage leading chants of “lock her up.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn argued that Clinton had mishandled
classified information and that she should quit the race.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As quoted by the Washington Post, he said, “If
I, a guy who knows this business, if I did a tenth, a tenth of what she did, I
would be in jail today.” Yet, Flynn’s own handling of classified information
was suspect.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>While serving in
Afghanistan, Flynn violated security regulations by divulging classified
documents to unauthorized Afghan and Pakistani officers, earning him a
reprimand from then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn’s perspectives on
important states are mercurial. </span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>On July 15, 2016, he was speaking
for the Trump campaign in Cleveland.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>That same day the Turkish military launched a coup (which fizzled within
a day). </span><span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn
praised the coup, which he hoped would topple the “Islamist” regime of
President Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“That is worth clapping for,”
he added.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">On Election Day, November 8, 2016, Flynn published a jaw-dropping
article on Turkey in <u>The Hill</u>, a Capitol Hill newspaper. The timing of
the piece was odd.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Perhaps Flynn took
Trump’s expected defeat for granted. Considering Flynn’s enthusiasm for the
failed July 15 coup, the content was stranger still.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Flynn now insisted that the United States
needed to stand with our ally Turkey and with President Erdoğan.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn’s shamelessly pro-Turkish government piece raised a question about
his integrity, since he failed to note that his consulting group was a paid
lobbyist for a company owned by a well-connected Turkish businessman. Perhaps
Flynn was simply taking care of business.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">The views that Flynn has
expressed on Russia are similarly conflicted.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>He has charged that Russian and Iran are “the two most active and
powerful members of the enemy alliance” facing the United States. Yet, he has
often argued for cooperation with Russia, including in paid appearances on RT,
the Russian television station. While attending an anniversary celebration for
RT in Russia, Flynn referred to the U.S. and Russia as being in a “funny
marriage”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The U.S. intelligence
community indicates that RT is a “Kremlin financed” operation that carries out
“strategic messaging”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">In December, Flynn conducted telephone conversations with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. Despite his denials that he had discussed sanctions imposed on Russia by the Obama administration, intelligence intercepts revealed that Flynn was not telling the truth. Not only is it likely that Flynn violated the law by interfering in U.S. policy, but he also apparently lied to Vice President Mike Pence when he denied discussing sanctions. As a result, Pence made public statements that were untrue. On several levels, Flynn's judgment proved to dubious. </span></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn's wisdom vis-a-vis a variety of topics is also suspect. In the 2016 book, <u>Field of
Fight</u>, which Flynn co-authored with Michael Ledeen, Iran is depicted as the
linchpin of an alliance between Syria, Russia and N. Korea. The authors almost
offhandedly suggest toppling the Islamic Republic of Iran. They advance the
dubious claim that millions of Iranian dissidents are willing to fight and that
all the U.S. would need to do is contribute a vigorous </span><span style="color: #111111; font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">information (propaganda)
campaign.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is the sort of
self-deceiving fantasy that made the Iraq invasion fiasco possible.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Flynn’s central premise is that
the U.S. is at war with “Radical Islam”, which threatens America at home and
abroad.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>No doubt, Islamic State jihadists
and similar extremist groups pose a serious security challenge. Yet, with
characteristic hyperbole, Flynn misstates the scope of the threat. He alleges
that “Radical Islamists” are pushing “very hard and very systematically” to
install Islamic law (shari’a) in the U.S. This is, as Flynn’s subordinates in
the DIA used to say, a “Flynn fact.” It is untrue. It is fake news.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">“Fear of Muslims is RATIONAL [caps
original],” he tweeted in February 2016.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Flynn conflates Muslim terrorists with all of Islam. In a speech in Dallas,
he denied that Islam is a religion: “Islam is a political ideology. It is a
political ideology. It definitely hides behind this notion of it being a
religion.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Flynn’s denigration of Islam,
especially if repeated from the White House, will alienate hundreds of millions
of Muslims around the world.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Surveying Flynn’s writings, his
speeches and interviews, one encounters a jumble of facts, rants, factoids and
fabrications.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He seems more intent on
settling scores and trafficking in stereotypes than presenting serious
analysis.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Notwithstanding Flynn’s military
career, he is ill-equipped to tackle weighty national security challenges and
his proximity to President Trump is a cause for profound concern. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Normal1" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 10.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Augustus R. Norton is professor

MASON, Herbert Warren II Of Newbury, MA, died suddenly on New Year's Day. He was Emeritus University Professor and William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of History and Religious Thought at Boston University and President of the Association des Amis Louis Massignon, Paris. Herbert Mason translated many of Massignon's works from French to English. An eminent scholar and translator, writer and poet, he has lived for long periods of time in France and Ireland, and has traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Japan. His books have been translated into numerous foreign languages, including French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Japanese. His verse narrative Gilgamesh, an interpretation of the ancient Sumerian epic poem transcends boundaries of age, language, religion, and time. It was nominated for a National Book Award and is taught in high schools and colleges. He is survived by his wife, Jeanine Young-Mason, his children Cathleen Mason, Paul Mason, Sarah Mason and their families and his step sons Scott Angell, Gregg Angell, and Glenn Angell and their families and his sister, Sarah Nelson and her family. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Immaculate Conception Church, Newburyport, MA on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 10:30 with interment at Mt. Auburn Cemetery immediately following the Mass. There will be a public memorial service on April 22, 2017 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. A fuller obituary will follow at a later date. The family is establishing an International Writing Prize in his name to be awarded annually.<br />

Ruhi Ramazani, the doyen of Iran scholars in North American, was a distinguished University of Virginia scholar, an elegant and optimistic human being, and a man whose generous heart was legion among those who knew him. He and his beloved wife Nesta were wonderful hosts and keen interlocutors who often opened their home to students, young and upcoming scholars and fellow colleagues. Harvard Law Prof Alan Dershowitz offers (<a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2015/07/16/gave-away-better-options-iran/BoNP56bH6I43sAMwG3FplO/story.html">Boston Globe, July 16, 2015</a>) what I take to be a illusory critique of the Iran nuclear deal that is rather typical of much of the punditry on the Iran nuclear deal.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div class="MsoNormal">
"We could have stuck to the original redlines – non-negotiable demands –
from the beginning. These included on-the-spot inspections of all
facilities rather than the nearly month-long notice that will allow the
Iranians to hide what they are doing; shutting down all facilities
specifically designed for nuclear weapons production; maintaining the
embargo on missiles and other sophisticated weapons rather than allowing
it to gradually be lifted; and most crucially, a written assurance that
the international community will never allow Iran to develop a nuclear
arsenal. The current assortment of indeterminate and varying timelines
agreed to will allow Iranians to believe — and proclaim — they will soon
be free of any constraints on their nuclear adventurism." </div>
</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: blue;">Two conclusions spring from a reading Dershowitz’s
querulous commentary on the nuclear deal with Iran.<span> </span>First, the U.S. gave away too much in the
negotiations.<span> </span>Second, that the writer
apparently believes that nothing short of Iranian capitulation to U.S. redlines
would constitute a success.</span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: blue;">Rather than accept an imperfect agreement, Dershowitz would
like the U.S. to be ready to go to war with Iran to “permanently end” its
nuclear program.<span> </span>He apparently thinks
that sanctions could have been kept in place indefinitely and that the Obama Administration
was mistaken to have said otherwise.<span> </span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: blue;">Some of his notions about how the negotiations might have
been organized would insure ineffectual results.<span> </span>For instance, he suggests that Middle East
allies of the U.S. should be allowed to participate.<span> </span>Given the multilateral quality of the
negotiations that means that Russia, China and other partners should invite
their regional friends too.<span> </span>Imagine how
successful that confab would be and how quickly acrimony would break out.</span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: blue;">He seems to think—“most crucially” in his words-- that a
written assurance by the “international community” that Iran will never be
allowed to have nuclear weapons would help demonstrate resolve.<span> </span>Perhaps Dershowitz thinks a U.S. General
Assembly resolution would do the trick?</span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: blue;">Critics of the deal, such as Dershowitz, defame President
Barack Obama by suggesting that he is willing to sacrifice U.S. security in
favor of his agenda.<span> </span>In turn, they offer
careless thinking about how one gets to yes in negotiations and they blithely
presume that hanging tough against Iran will eventually come to heel. <span> </span></span></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: blue;">
</span><div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: blue;">Those who would like to kill the deal need to think much
more rigorously about what they suggest as an alternative, and how they propose
to put that alternative in place.<span> </span>So
far, what they offer resembles petulance more than analysis.</span></div>

This is an enlightened effort to bring higher education to young women in a rural setting where the notion of "going off to college" is culturally difficult.<br />
<br />
Some the graduating student wrote essays on the importance was progressing to college. <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-life/11700985/Afghan-schoolgirls-write-letters-on-why-they-deserve-to-go-to-college.html">See the Telegraph to read them</a>, <a href="http://www.marieclaire.co.uk/blogs/549798/girls-in-afghanistan-have-written-letters-begging-to-go-to-college.html">or the Marie Claire blog</a>. <br />

The new two-year technical college is a follow-on project to a impressive local school that has garnered the support of village fathers and mothers. The story of the school is told in a new documentary from <a href="http://principlepictures.com/">Principle Pictures</a>--"<a href="http://principlepictures.com/what-tomorrow-brings/">What Tomorrow Brings</a>"--that will be premier later this year. <a href="https://vimeo.com/61291619">The teaser is here</a>.<br />
