George's Friend Vladamir Back in the Game

In Cold war days the contours of geo-politics in the Middle East were defined by competition between Washington and Moscow. Well, Moscow is back.
In a gesture that is far more than gratuitous good will, Russia has agreed to write off $9.8 billion of Syrian debt. In the waning days of the Soviet Union it was Gorbachev who told Bashar al-Asad's father that he could no longer count on the complete support of Moscow, so this latest move signals a significant gesture by a great power.
