Can't Wal-Mart, a Retail Behemoth, Pay More?

The New York Times > Business > Can't Wal-Mart, a Retail Behemoth, Pay More?

Attention Wal-mart shoppers. The nickels and dimes you save at Wal-mart are coming straight out the pockets of the cashiers, clerks and greeters who earn an average of about $9 an hour. The other discounters, such as Costco, pay their employees much more. It is appropriate to ponder for a moment whether you are really saving anything if Wal-mart employees are earning so little that they end having to draw heavily on public resources, such as food stamps. In effect, you and I are subsidizing Wal-mart with our tax dollars.
