Berri re-elected as speaker of the Lebanese parliament

International News Article | Reuters.com

In late Feb., following the assassination of Hariri, there did not seem to be much of a chance for Nabih Berri to survive as speaker. He has pulled off an extraordinary feat of political endurance. The Amal movement, which he heads, has steadily lost popular base to Hizballah, yet Hizballah found that by aligning with Berri it would avoid finding itself isolated on the Lebanese political scene. While there are a number of factors explaining Berri's deft trick, one is certainly the U.S. pressure on Hizballah, which prompted the party to pragmaticallyseeks allies in order to forestall a move under UN Security Council resolution 1509 for it to be disarmed.
