Print - SPIEGEL Interview with Lebanon's Star Musician Abou-Khalil: "Lebanon Doesn't Need US to Help" - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE: "Abou-Khalil: There is a great belief that democracy is the salve for all problems. America is only concerned with democracy as it is practiced in the Western world. The loyalty of people in Third World nations, however, goes first to their families, to the clan they come from, then, to the place they live and only at the end, to the government. One can try to bring democracy to these nations, but it won't bring lasting peace. It will be just as ineffective as the attempt in the Middle Ages to heal the world through Christianity. What came of that was the Crusades."
