Wolfowitz: The Exit Interviews | Mark Bowden

The Atlantic Online | July/August 2005 | Wolfowitz: The Exit Interviews | Mark Bowden
This article reports on a series of interviews from last fall to this spring. There are a number of candid comments from Wolfowitz among the most interesting is that it was the mailed anthrax that cemented the case in his mind for toppling Saddam. He makes several questionable allusions to Saddam's ties to terrorists, questionable because despite his many outrageous actions there has yet to be any persuasive evidence that Saddam was in cahoots with the likes of Zarqawi or Bin Laden. In any case, once 9-11 occurred Wolfowitz believed that Saddam had to go.
There are a few interesting comments on the insurgency, but the reader is most struck by how facile the understanding of Iraq seems to be even at the level of an admittedly intelligent and influential official.
