Disquiet about the situation in Iraq has been stewing amongst foreign policy elites for some months. This OPED by the former director of the CIA and former Pentagon official John Deutch should be considered representative of a minority perspective that is becoming more prevalent, namely the view that the US is dissipating its power in Iraq and that it should develop a measured timetable for removing most U.S. troops. The key objection to this approach is that doing so will weaken the fledgling Iraqi goverment and lend momentum to the insurgency. In any case, this piece will stoke the debate. Readers here will recall that I published an earlier version of Deutch's argument last week, drawing on a talk he gave recently in Cambridge.
