Despite a lot of talk about disarming HAMAS, the movement has been bolstered by the Israeli exit and is in no mood to give up its weapons. Expect instead that HAMAS will effectively share power with the PA in Gaza. Meantime, with Israeli settlement activity intensifying in the West Bank HAMAS will make a strong argument staying well armed.

"The man, identifying himself as fugitive bombmaker Mohammed Deif, described the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as a victory for armed resistance, rejected calls for his group to disarm, and vowed to continue attacks on Israel until it is erased from the map.
"Deif, widely believed to be at the top of Israel's most-wanted list, is responsible for the deaths of dozens in suicide bombings."

"Bibi" Netanyahu, who resigned as finance minister over Gaza, says the forced removal of settlers is a victory for Hamas. He is right. Had Hamas not attacked settlers in Gaza and civilians in Israel, Sharon would never have relinquished a square inch.
Terrorism is an immoral and illegitimate weapon of war. But the original sin that ignited this war was the illegal – indeed, insane – seizure of and settlement on Palestinian land, and the stubborn refusal by Israel to conclude a peace when they held the whip hand, which they will not hold forever.
