Two UNIFIL vets reflect on peacekeeping in south Lebanon

Jordan Times (Opinion Section): "While it is popular sport in some circles to castigate the United Nations for its failures, when it comes to operations like UNIFIL the force will be no more effective that the contributing countries will allow it to be. Will European governments allow their soldiers to protect Lebanese civilians from Israeli “defensive” attacks, or will it allow its soldiers to forcefully disarm Hizbollah. We are doubtful.

Therefore, as we contemplate a new departure in United Nations peacekeeping, we can only be sceptical but hopeful."
