Egypt's rulers: scared of freedom

A leading intellectual aligned with the Egyptian state told me earlier this year that the one arm of the regime that has never been stronger or more competent is state security. Otherwise, in my view, what you see is an incompetent state mired in corruption, glued together by petty privilege and scared to death of permitting freedom to expand. It is a sad condition for a country so rich in history and so blessed by the spirit of its people.
