Acid is the preferred weapon, but boiling water or oil are sometimes alternative expedients that vengeful men use to disfigure women that they cannot have, or simply wish to punish for infractions of customary law in Pakistan, Egypt, Algeria, Cambodia and elsewhere. The common denominator is that these are societies where the connected are not called to account before the law, or where men are given wide berth by the police in matters of "personal honor" when they act against women.
