Chris van Hollen was a long-time diplomat, a well-respected figure in Washington foreign policy circles during the 1980s and 1990s. I used to see him occassionally at Middle East events, and I remember extended conversations with him about the Levant, especially Lebanon. In the early 1990s he was editor of the Middle East Journal at the Middle East Institute.
He was a thoughtful, gentle man who enjoyed new ideas, and yet brought a world of experience and hard-won lessons to the table. I remember him fondly and with gratitude.
