Egypt's Opposition Groups Unite

Los Angeles Times: Egypt's Opposition Groups Unite

There have been attempts over the years to forge a united opposition front but this has failed for several reasons: government coercion and arrests, distrust between right and left, and key ideological differences.
Thus, when the late and impressive Dr. Said al-Najjar attempted in the mid-1990s to conclude a civic pact with the Ikhwan his interlocutors refused because they insisted on shari'a law as the basis Egypt's law.
The interesting question is whether the opposition can now sustain its unity in the face of a regime that has shown itself unwilling to accept only a tame and obedient opposition. Could it be that Dr. al-Najjar's vision of a Civic Forum has come of age?
