Israel Policy Forum--a font of good sense on the Arab-Israeli conflict

Israel Policy Forum: "There is surprising naivete here in the United States about those Israelis (and their backers abroad) who are fighting withdrawal from Gaza. All too many think that they, although misguided, are patriots who want what is best for their country. In other words, they are wrong about Gaza but not wrong in general.
It's just not so. Let me be clear here. I am not talking about settlers in general or even all settlers who oppose Gaza withdrawal. I am talking about the fanatical minority that is trying to physically thwart a plan devised by Israels democratically elected government to reduce the demographic threat to the Jewish state, save the lives of its soldiers and create conditions for an Israel at peace with the Palestinians.
There is no need here to describe some of the more egregious actions of the extremists. The attempted lynching of a Palestinian youth and the planting of a dummy bomb in the Jerusalem bus station (designed to divert Israeli police and security officials from real threats) were only the most repulsive of their tactics. And we can expect more. Those who say that Israeli soldiers are no different than Nazis and pray for the assassination of the prime minister are capable of anything. "
