The Daily Star - Business Articles - Syria expels hundreds of Lebanese managers: "Syria's already sour relations with Lebanon took a turn for the worse with a decision to expel hundreds of Lebanese managers and skilled engineers from companies operating in Damascus and other cities. Syria also enforced tough inspection procedures along its border with Lebanon, leaving hundreds of transit trucks waiting their turn to cross the border to Iraq and other Arab gulf states.
Syrian officials claimed that most of those who were ordered to leave the country carried expired work permits, adding that the measure included other Arab nationals.
However, Lebanese officials and businessmen see these arbitrary measures as another attempt to punish some anti-Syrian groups for their campaign against the regime in Damascus following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and other journalists and thinkers.
The Syrian authorities did not even spare companies run by close Lebanese allies such as former Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who controls the majority stake in one of the two cellular firms in Syria."
