With quiet effect, Iranian women advance

With quiet effect, Iranian women advance - The Boston Globe: "''We made efforts to change family law, criminal law, and we arrived at [the conclusion that] the constitution has to be changed,' she said -- a taboo position because the constitution enshrines traditional, conservative Islam as the spirit of the state, and is considered unamendable by the people in power. Her friends nodded in agreement.
The problem, said Ruza, an activist in a prominent nongovernmental organization, is that the constitution says the basic unit of society is the family, not the individual. The women said this provides a legal rationale -- preserving the family -- for reducing women's rights relative to those of men."
