A courageous Egyptian...

Gamal al-Banna is the octogenarian brother of Hasan al-Banna, the fteacher who in 1928 founded the Muslim Brotherhood. He is a charming and very thoughtful man, but on first encounter he seems an unlikely source of controversy. In fact, he is one of the reformist thinkers in Egypt who is shaking up debate in Egypt by challenges some of the fundamental tenets of Islamist ideology, especially the the feasibility of establishing an "Islamic state" in the Twentieth or Twenty-first century.
