The New York Times > International > Europe > Britain's Mainstream Muslims Find Voice

The New York Times > International > Europe > Britain's Mainstream Muslims Find Voice: "Muslims have formed groups to increase police departments' recruitment of Muslims and to lobby for Muslim rights. Muslim media outlets are flourishing.
'For us the priority is living as a British Muslim,' Mr. Bunglawala said. 'You can live close to Islam and live as a good citizen in a secular state.'"

This is an unusually balanced piece that shows how Muslims in the West adapt to the larger democratic settings in which they live. Implicitly, this account of British Muslims underlines--yet again--that if you wish to understand whether Islam and democracy are compatible you are well advised to look at real cases rather than hypothetical cases based on a very selective reading of texts, as so many of the "Muslims are coming, the Muslims are coming!" agitators prefer to do.
