Since 2007, Egyptian workers and members of the professions (including the Lawyers' Syndicate) have often launched strikes to protest government administrative and economic decisions, as well as to voice a variety of grievances. While Egypt has been somewhat insulated from the global recession, it is starting to bite in Egypt. Presently, strikes, demonstrations and sit-ins are underway in Cairo, Giza, Suez, Ismailiya, Helwan and other sites.
